ALLEGED THEFT
(BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) HASTINGS, March 27. Henry Wood Shepherd, in charge of Te Mata station’, Havelock North, the property of William Richmond, sheepfanner "and meat exporter, Hastings, was committed fo.r trial a-t Napier on_ June 8 on five charges of stealing 37 sheep, (the property of Mr Richmond 18, unknown 13, the property of, Mr White, sheepfarmer, 6), of a total value of £46; on one charge of the theft of three cattle, the property of Mr Richmond, valued at £25; and on one charge of the theft of wool, the' property of Mr Richmond, valued at £l2. The total amount involved is £B3. ■ r
FIRE IN MOTOR GARAGE. WELLINGTON, March _ 29. A fire in the building belonging to Dominion Motors, and situated -in , Courtenay Place, destroyed eight cars and damaged 20 others. The brigade confined the outbreak to the garage portion, and the showrooms were not touched. There were 55 cars, mostly ! all new, in the garage, and besides those actually destroyed or partially burned many others suffered | from water and smoke. The brigade did very good work to confine the damage to such small limits. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. QUINNAT SALMON CAUGHT. ■■ WELLINGTON, March 29. A local angler caught a two-foot quinnat salmon in a stream running into the Hutt river, nearly 20 miles from its mouth. So far as is known, this is the first caught in this' island. Its weight was about eight pounds. A PALATIAL YACHT. - WELLINGTON, March 29. The steam yacht Surprise, _ which ar r rived on Saturday, was built for an American millionaire, and afterwards belonged to King Leopold of Belgium. / . The furniture and fittings are most elaborate, and are said to be worth £200,000. There are valuable paintings on board, and the table centrepiece, which was at one time the property of Napoleon, is valued at £IOOO. Each stateroom has a bath attached, and is more like a bedroom of a mansion than a ship’s cabin. The vessel is 27 years old, and can steam 14 knots.The owner, Mr G. H. Williams, of South Wales, intends to stay some time in New Zealand fishing and deer stalking.
RECORD PRICE FOR WOOL. WELLINGTON, March 29. , At the wool sales, 43 hales of- the Richmond Brook clip (merino) brought' 23d. which is a record for New* Zea-; land this season. OLD MAN DROWNED. AUCKLAND, March 29. Janies Morley White, aged 70, a resident of Avondale, was found drowned in Oakley Creek, Avondale, on Sunday. He had ‘ been missing from his home since Saturday morning and was found by a search party. It was suposed that he was sitting on the edge of the creek and fell in. UNIVERSITY DEBATING TEAM. AUCKLAND. March 29. The British Universities . debating team arrived by the Aorangi last night. It is composed of the following: Pane. R£ed (Kingis- College, London), R. Nunn May ((Birmingham University), C. H. E. Malson (New College, Oxford), T. P. McDonald (Edinburgh, University). The latter is not the son of the ex-Prime Minister who was here last year. The members of the team leave for Dunedin on Monday evening. '
