NOTES BY "MAECENAS.” Although Hie totalisator figures at the recent meeting of the Rangitikei Racing Club showed a substantial decline, the club should show a good profit, as the gates wore bettor than usual. That capable rider B. F. Morris will ride Grand Knight in the Great Easter Handicap at Riecarton on Easter Monday, so the imported horse will not suffer on the score of horsemanship. While the prize money offered by the Rangitikei Racing Club i 9 9mall as

prizes go to-day the quality of the horses competing there was exceptionally good. A couple of useful hacks in Eden Hall and Great Day got on the winning list at Bulls. Both have pace and will win in their turn.

Lady Cavendish will accompany Reremoana north, the mission of the filly being the Avondale Stakes, which event is run under weight-for-age conditions. Blood Red, which ‘ showed promising form in the jumping events at Bulls, claims All Red as his sire. This gelding has size and should soon win a minor jumping event. Blood Red is trained by J. Morris. Greum will be ridden in the Oaks at Ellerslie by R. Reed, and in his hands Desert Gold’s daughter should make matters interesting for Mandane and Co.

Rapine will be a runner for the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie, and will have the services of R. Reed as pilot. The mile of this race may prove too short for Rapine. Reed will also steer Star Stranger in the St. Leger at Ellerslie. Despite his indifferent running during the last ten or eleven months, Hipo is very much in the ‘'boom” for the Easter Handicap at the coming Auckland Racing Club’s meeting. The Panmure filly Mandane was a starter on each day of the Rangitikei meeting, but her form was nothing to enthuse over. In fact, some are wondering if she is the certainty for the Oaks at Ellerslie her champions claim. L. Morris will ride Eerein‘o;ina in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday next. Although asked to carry the load of 0.11, the Egmont trained gelding will be one of the hardest, to beat.

On the opening day of the Rangitikei meeting, Ngata showed sufficient form in the sprint event to induce his connections to favour his chance in the big handicap decided on the second day. Ngata duly won, but had little to spare.

After running a good race in the Cup at Bulls on Wednesday, Glengariff even ran a better race in a good class field on the second day and with an ounce of luck may have beaten Ngata. Rational was produced each day of the Rangitikei meeting, and ran good races into second place each day. Rational does not now begin so well as of vorc, but he battled bis races right out at Bulls.

With her Opunake victory fresh in the minds of backers, Denmure was backed as a certainty for the Rangitoto Hack at the Rangitikei meeting. Slow to move when the barrier rose, Denmure ran last all the way and gave her backers a very poor run. Denmure galloped as if suffering from kidney trouble.

Bisogne, .which has proved a. very successful sire, will it is announced by advertisement in this issue, "stand the coming season in Ha.wera. During the present season Bisogne’® stock lias won in stake money close on £6OOO, his representatives contributing to this total being Avola, Bonogne, Benora, Banjuke, Shuteye, Sovena, Vaward, Glengai’iff, Decades, and Kenyon.

MANAWATU AUTUMN RACES. NOMINATIONS CLOSE. The autumn race meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, 21st and 22nd April. As announced in our advertisement columns of this issue, nominations close on Tuesday next, 30th inst, iat 9 p.m. Forfeits are also due for the Sires’ Produce Stakes and Manawatu Stakes.
