Consequent on the official gazetting of the vacancy in the Eden electorate, the clerk of writs has received the Governor-General’s direction to proceed with the issue of the writ for the by-election. It is understood that the writ will issue within the next day or two. A the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, on the complaint of Mr L. A. Taylor,'.a order cfor a term of 12 months was issued against Hugh Rodger. A Wanganui exchange states that dairy produce valued at approximately half a million sterling was graded at the cool stores at Wanganui this season. * The donation of £1 Is to the fund being raised to send the Masterton runner, R. A. Rose, on a. tour of Great Britain and America was authorised at the annual meeting of the Hawera Rugby Pootball Club last evening. Arranged by Chieftain W. G. Simpson, a concert, party representing the Hawera Scottish Society visited the Hawera Pubjjc Hospital on Wednesday evening. Vocal and instrumental items were combined by the members of the party, making an interesting programme, which afforded a great deal of pleasure to the hospital patients, whose appreciation was evinced .by their freely-expressed thanks to the entertainers. Prior to returning to their homes, the members of the party were the guests of tjie matron and nursing staff at supper. ,

The harvest thanksgiving meetings of the Salvation Army in Hawera will be held this week-end, when Mrs Adjutant Huston, of Wanganui, is to preside. On the Sunday afternoon the visitor will give an. address on “Seeds and Weeds that Grow in Home Gardens.'’ Anyone desiring to help with donations of fruit, vegetables, jam, eggs, etc., mlay leave these at -the hall, or at Mr. Yearbury’s boot store on Saturday “or Monday. On Monday evening members of the Methodist Choir will render a programme, when Mr. E. Dixon will take the chair. An auction sale of the goods will be held' the .same evening. St. John’s Sunday School Hall, Hawera, was nicely filled with members and friends last evening on the occasion of the annual congregational, social, following the anniversary -services of Sunday last. The hall was prettily decorated with flowers and greenery. Rev. R. Eie Evans presided over the gathering and, in a. break .in the programme of vocal and instrumental. items, introduced Rev. J. MacGregor, who, a month, or two ago-, was inducted to th e charge, at Stratford. Mr MacGregor, in a short and forceful address, said that he could say nothing of the past history of St. John’s, hut he .reminded his hearers of their obligation as Christians to “Go,” and. in their church, life, to conduct a “going concern” and not a dead business. The programme was keenly enjoyed by all present, and .at the conclusion. v before pronouncing the benediction. Rbv. Evans thanked all •who had in any way contributed towards the. evening’s pleasure and success. A bountiful supper brought a very enjoyable function to a close. A. grand ball, particulars of which will be advertised later, will be held in the River lea Hall on Friday, April 23. Harrops Ltd. announce that the latest for autumn and winter is now opening in all departments and will be shown during the course of the nest few days.—Advt.
