The attendance officer reported visiting 25'.schools at which, returns showed very little irregularity. Thirty-six notices- of irregular attendance had been sent out during the six weeks preceding Alarch 12. AIANUAL INSTRUCTION. The supervisor of the manual instruction reported as follows:: Attendances at the woodwork and cookery classes have been good except in a lew oases where conveyance difficulties. have arisen. The train from Patea to Hawera lias recently been .arriving very late and, if this "continues, _ it will be necessary for Mokoia and \\ hareroa to cease attending. Changes in the railway time-table may also -make it necessary for Te Roti to travel by ’bus in order to receive the necessary minimum amount of instruction. Relieving Instructors.—Aim E. Bowler, who was 'appointed relieving; instructress for the schools worked from Stratford. completed her- work on February 8. Her work was efficiently carried out. Aliss Dean commenced duties on Alarch 1. Prior to the commencement of the work this 1 year a conference of instructors was held, at which matters relating to the cost of maintenance and the general conduct of the classes were discu«ed. Instructors will, as a result of this, endeavour ,f.o carry out the work as efficiently and as economically as is possible. AGRICULTURAL INSTRUCTOR The senior instructor in agriculture j reported as follows with regard to work done during the month: Primary Schools. —The visits of mBtructors "to primary schools 1 commenced early in the month and this work has been carried out regularly. The work done ha® been mainly of am organising nature, special, attention being given to the schemes of work for the year. Clare of Ground® during Vacation. — It is pleasing to be able to report -that many of the school committees have pi ven special attention to the care of the grounds during the holidays and in other cases teachers arranged for the children to 'attend occasionally to keep the grounds in order. Consequently these grounds are in their usual neat •i ; ' i.-n and very little extra work war required in them during this month. Afforestation Work.—ln most eases, the work In. afforestation is proceeding satisfactorily. Nurseries ha-Ve given good results and due attention is being ::ven to the young trees. Where .Vo--t-tions are laid down the great growth of fern is occasionally causing some difficulty, but efforts are being made to -' with this. f >ys’ and Girls-’ Clubs.—-Interim reports on the plots indicate that the work is -Fair. Many of the plots examined -show that considerable difficulty -'- Vtblisliiiiig the crop® was experienced. The plots are; however, receiv.n‘.r cill necessary care. District Hii-gh Schools.- —-Work in the district high schools has been commenced. Alanaia has a roll number o-f 20 and Olpunake 35. At Alanaia the work! is being carried out by Mr Allan, under Air. Syme’-s supervision, but it was considered advisable to leave the classes -at Olpunake under Air. Syme, as they were last year. A grant has been received for the furniture and

equipment required atOpunake and tike provision of this is being attended to. •j'he remainder oi the apparatus, required at this school should arrive very shortly. Alt Manaia difficulty is being experienced in carrying on the work, beoaiKse of shortage of equipment and material. Further representations should be made to the Department for a grant for this school. Teachers’ Glasses.—These were commenced on February 20 at the three centres. Teachers' .Refresher Course—Jt seems desirable ithafb a refresher course should he arranged for teachers during the May vacation. This course, -to., be satisfactory, should be compulsory for all tea oliers. An exceedingly beneficial course in handwork and agriculture dioukl be arranged. A subsidiary class in agriculture for examination work could well Ibe arranged lor those applicants who /were unable to attend a course during the Xmas vacation. NiWW PLYMOUTH; DENTAL CLINIC. The dental officer at New Plymouth (Nurse J. Mackenzie) submitted the following annual report. The board decided to thank the nurse and to acknowledge the work done. • There are nearly 2000 children receiving dental attention in New Plymouth, stated the report. These children are re-examined every six months and, where necessary, further treatment is given, so that tine teeth are kept always in good order. The attendances for 1925 were 2-381. The number of patients treated was 1875. The effects of all treatment given during the last three years, is now very noticeable. All the months re-examined are clean and healthy, and as a result .there is a marked improvement in the general appearance of many of the children. A healthy mouth, makes a healthy child. The children, too, take d great interest and' pride in their teeth. It is pleasing to see the very clear evidence of the regular use of the tooth brush. Parents, too, are interested, and consideration Is .given to the child’s diet. TURUTURU SCHOOL. In reply to the board’s request for a definite reply with regard to the proposed Turuturu School and latrines at Hlawera, the- Department wrote .stating that it. was thought desirable that an officer of the Department .should visit Hawera to confer with representatives of the hoard in connection with the several .applications from Hawera, which were being field in abeyance. Tlhe / board forwarded a telegram urging that the visit of the officer be exiled i ted. general,. Deputations from Fitzroy and Ur.uti school committees waited on the board with requests, for increased accommodation, improvements, etc. It was decided* to submit the applications to the Department. It was decided .to .call tenders for the conveyance' of 25 children from. Riverdale fo,the Manaia. School.
