MURDER OF MATTEOTTI.

PUBLIC PROSECUTOR’S WHITEWASHING SPEECH. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. ROME, March 28. At the close of the evidence in the Matteotti trialjv the Public Prosecutor, Signor Chieti, in a singular whitewashing speech, said he refused to pour tears on the tomb of Matteotti, over whose grave too many false tears had been shed already. It was not a political trial, hut one in which five unfortunates were anxiously awaiting their fntes. These five have a vision of a grave still nauseous with all its stench, as when the decayed remains of Matteotti were taken out. They fought bravely in the war and bear decorations for valour. The Prosecutor claimed that Dumini was guilty of unintentional death, following on the culpable sequestration of Matteotti’s person. The other prisoners were accomplices in a minor degree, such kidnapping being common at. the time and being regarded as practical jokes.
