IMPRISONMENT FOR THEFT. (by TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.; AUCKLAND, March 19. - At the Police Court, Leo Sylvester Hannan ,aged 25, and George Edward Allen, aged 26, were charged witH theft from the Commercial Hotel. Hannan, aged 25, and George Edward fnl damage by using explosives on Rosenfeld and Co.’s safe. Allen was described by the chief detective as a master criminal with a bad list. He could handle explosives, and was an organiser of crime. Mr Hunt, S.M., sentenced Allen to six months’ imprisonment and two years’ reformatory treatment. Hannan was ordered six months’ imprisonment and one year’s reformatory treatment. POST OFFICE AT TUATAPERE OPENED. INVERCARGILL, March 19.
Speaking at the opening of a new post office at Tuatapere, Sir James Parr said he had never seen finer country than he had passed through. North Island land of a similar nature was very much dearer, and Southland farmers had shown commendable wisdom in keeping their land values down to a safe and sane basis. He commented on the rapid growth d7~Tuatapere, and congratulated the district on the possession of a fine office to meet the growing business. CHARGE AGAINST LORRY DRIVER. WELLINGTON. March 19. Teodethero Gnrbes, who was found with another man by a constable drinking beer alongside a lorry, and who denied any connection with the vehicle, hut later tried to drive it away, was convicted of being m charge of it while drunk. He was fined £ls, and his license was cancelled for one vear.
