MORE POPULATION. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION. 1 AUCKLAND, March 15. Immigrants who arrived by the Athenic on Sunday appear to be a desi ratAe class of settlers. Many were heard to say that they had come here to work, and to work hard. They include 44 boys under the Salvation Army immigration scheme, 12 public school boys to be placed on farms, and 42 domestics.
VOLUNTEER SEAMEN RETURN. AUCKLAND, March 15. Thirty-six volunteer seamen who took the steamer Waiinana to London, returned .by the Athenic vestei'day. They are fall ■ of praise of the treatment they received on the boats, both on the Homeward and return voyages, as well 1 , as enjoying their stay in England.
FIRE, AT TAKAPUNA. AUCKLAND, Feb. 15. A building containing fifteen rooms, in Bretts Avenue, Takapuna, owned by J. E. Cochrane and leased by Geo. White, was destroyed by fire on Saturday night. It Was occupied: by Mr White and family and four sections were let in flats, hut Whites and the only tenant were absent. Bath house and contents were insured.
