RIFLE SHOOTING.

BATTLE PRACTICE COMPETITION. NOVELTY FOR CADETS. TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) TRENTELAM, March 11. Cadets forming teams from each of the three commands competed in a battle practice- competition. The boys showed great keenness in the work, which was judged on the hits on the “enemy” and fire direction, control, and discipline. The idea was that aeroplanes had reported the advance of an enemy force which made its appearance in various formations at different points along the front, machine guns participating in the attack, which culminated in a portion of the “enemy” making an assault on the defenders under cover of gas. Moving miniature targete represented the men and machine guns, all increasing in size as they drew nearer. The final explosion of a pseudo gas bomb and the sudden appearance of life-size figures in the front of the parapet was very realistic. The cadets all showed good knowledge of their part. General Young, who wa6 present, congratulated the boys, making special reference to the Northern team’6 commander, C.S.M. Favelle, whose control over the team was remarkable. The result 1 was: Southern team, hits 388 points, fire direction, etc., 28; Northern, 253 and 44; Central, 253 and 20. The Northern’s control score of 44 points out of 50 was specially good. Regimental Teams’ Rifle Match (for teams of 80): £l6, Permanent Force (Central Depot), 632 points; £l2, Ist Battalion Wellington Regiment, 603; £lO, New Zealand Naval Division, 590; £B, Ist Battalion Auckland Regiment, 557; £6, Ist Waikat-o Regiment, Waikato, 568; £4, Permanent Staff, Southern Command, 559. Twenty-four teams competed. Vickers Machine Gun Match (fire with. movement. 600 to 300 yards) was won by Bth Mounted Rifles. Marlborough. with 91 points; Ist Mounted Rifles. Christchurch, being runners-up with 74.
