FIREMEN’S COMPETITIONS.
SUPT. MORRISON’S IMPRESSIONS
HAWERA TEAM IMPROVES
That the fire brigades’ conference and demonstration held at Dunedin last week was a success in every way was stated by Superintendent A. Morrison, of the Hawera brigade, during the course of a conversation with a Star reporter this morning. The business done at the conference was most useful, and should go a long way towards, increasing the standard of efficiency among brigades generally. "While conditions were ideal as far as weather was concerned during the period of the competition, the ground being made up of sand from the harbour, the water used during the demonstration was reduced to a very bad state before the concluding events were held. The water pressure averaged 1401 b throughout, and the Hawera firemen handled this high pressure exceedingly well. The superintendent considered that the competitions had shown that_ the Hawera team had improved considerably in their work since the Cliristchurch demonstration. Last year the team had been placed second for the high pressure shield, which included all the events in which water was used. The Mereweatlier Shield had been lost this year, but it was for one event only, and never had a team won that event twice in succession.
Competition had been much keener this year than at Christchurch, and considerable improvement was evident in teams lijrom Hastings, Hillside Railway, Whangarei, Masterton, and Te Kuiti.
Mr. Morrison considers that the experience gained by the local men should be of great value, to them, and spoke highly of their conduct throughout the competitions.
