SAID TO BE NON-EXISTENT. GERMAN SCIENTISTS’ SEARCH FAILS. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COP YRIGH'I. Received 12.40 p.m.' to-day. CAPETOWN, March 10. The German survey ship Meteor has arrived after 11 weeks’ exploration in the Southern Atlantic. Captain Spies reports that Thompson Island, marked on the British maps as being 80 miles north-east of Bouvet Island, conld not be found, although many days were spent in the neighbourhood. German scientists are satisfied that they have proved the disappearance or the nonexistence of the island. —A. and N.Z. Assn.
The position of given on British maps as being .53deg. 50min. south and 3deg. 28min. east. It is one of a group of three small islands in the South Atlantic south of Africa. Thompson Island is the northernmost island in the group, Bouvet Island is a little to the south, and Lindsay Island is on the west. They are said to he of volcanic origin.
