INDUSTRIAL MATTERS.
INTERESTING YEAR AHEAD,
EXPIRY OF AWARDS.
(By Telegraph—Special to The Star.) WELLINGTON, March 11.
The present year is likely to be an interesting one in the industrial world. The seamen’s award expires at the end of June, and in the meantime the seamen nave decided to withdraw from the Arbitration Court, On April 30 the various agreements under which the coal miners are working will run out, and the miners are now taking steps to get into touch with the coal owners with a view to discussing wages and working conditions. A meeting of the National Council of the United Mine Workers of New Zealand will be held in Wellington on March 17. The question of what wages demands are to be put forward, and the subject of trade union unity generally in New Zealand will be discussed. The miners on the West Coast of the South Island and in some of the northern unions belong to the United Mine Workers’ organisation, but none of the southern unions are affiliated.
