RIFLE SHOOTING.
ARMY CHAMPIONSHIP. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) TRENTHAM, March 9. The army rifle championship meeting opened this morning in fine weather. There was a light but variable wind. The visibility was patchy owing to passing clouds. The competitors, who total 450, including a party from the New Zealand Naval Division, paraded early and were briefly addressed by Colonel Burgess, chief executive officer, who welcomed new competitors and made clear the need for an implicit observance of the rules governing the conduct of shooting. By nine o’clock firing was in full blast, a start being made with the first leg of the army championship series, rapid arid snap-shooting at 300 yards and deliberate shooting at 600 yards. The first two matches were over by eleven o’clock, some fair scores being registered, though many found it easier to hit the mound in front of the targets. The afernoon will be devoted to fire with movement over ground ranging from 500 to 100 yards from the targets. The cadets have made a commencement with their championship at short ranges, all showing great keenness.
