MOTOR CAR LICENSES.
PLATE-CHANGING CONDEMNED
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE DISAPPROVAL.
Strong disapproval of the present system of issuing motor licenses and plates to owners was expressed at the meeting of the executive of the Hawera of Commerce last evening, members characterising the system as an “absurd waste of money.” Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P., who brought the- matter before the Chamber, said that ho thought something should he done towards devising a cheaper and better method of displaying on cars the “receipt for license fees” to which the present ‘change of number plates practically amounted. The annual change of plates was costing the country £15,000, which was altogether too expensive. He favoured a system such as was used in England, where a small coloured disc was displayed on the back of the car. He moved that the attention of the Government be drawn to the matter, with a view to having the set of plates which will be distributed shortly made permanent. Mr. E. C. Fletcher seconded the motion. The chairman, Mr. J. B. Murdoch, said he did not think there were any owners who did not object to the present regulations. The system was too expensive, and. there was no reason why ear users should be forced to pay this amount. The system adopted by the Welling ton City Council, which provided for the display of small discs gummed on the windscreen, the colour being changed annually, and another • used on the Hutt Road, the licenses being placed in conspicuous holders, were agreed to be most efficient, and the Chamber considered that the Government should adopt some similar cheap scheme.
Mr. Dickie’s motion was then car riod.
