JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOLS.
MINISTER’S ADVOCACY
“CURE FOR WASTEFUL PRACTICE.”
(BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION .) HASTINGS, March 3.
The Minister for Education (Sir J. Parr) opened the new high school at Hastings this afternoon, in the presence of a large assemblage. In the course of his speech, the Minister said he was going to fill a position in the heart of the Empire which was one of the highest in the service of the Dominion, but he felt that the position of Minister for Education was scarcely less important, because education was the corner stone of democracy.
The Minister congratulated the people on having one of the finest sites For a school in New Zealand, with twenty acres of ground, the building and equipment costing £19,500. The parents in New Zealand were always ready to spend money on education, and therefore nowhere in the world was there a higher level of general intelligence. He strongly supported junior high schools, saying that they would be a cure for the wasteful practice of nearly a third of the secondary students leaving in a year or less. The time had arrived to introduce the system of junior high schools throughout the country, and he considered they would, cost practically no more than the present system.
