THE RACING
COMMENTS BY “MAECENAS.” WOQJ> VILILE , Feb. 25. The. weather was dull but pleasant lor the concluding day of the Woodville meeting. The attendance was quite satisfactory, but the totalisator figures showed a decline as compared with last year. Banjuke was a solid favourite for the Hopeland Hurdles, but faulty jumping at a couple of fences cost him many lengths. The rider of Suspicion tried to win all the way, but over the last furlong A. McDonald brought Tawehi along with a nice run to beat Suspicion by three parts of a length. Banjuke was an indifferent third, and Festival fourth. The Novice Plate served to introduce a promising maiden performer in Imitation (Absurd —Gold Painting), which soon got to the front to win very easily .from Windy Night, who owed hi? position to R Reed’s riding. Capitulation was a good third and Braemar close up fourth. The scratching of Autumn and. Butterscotch reduced the Autumn Handicap to a one dividend race. At the close of betting, Novar had the largest following, but only carried £9O more than Good Sport. The early leader was Crown Gem, but Phoenix Park ran to the lead going down the hack stretch, and he led into the straight from Novar. But the latter finished nicely, to win by half a length, while Ailmarimba, vvith a late run, dead-heated with Phoenix Park.
Of a large field in the Mangapapa Hack. Nadarino was the elect of the majority of bettors, but White Fang and Bonideer were each well supported. Despite his big load, Nadarino was the first to begin; hut 'White Fang soon went to the load, and at the straight entrance Lady Ideal, Nadarino, and Nastori were his closest attendants. Over the final stretch.. White Fang ran on well to win easily from Nastori, who heat Nadarino oveV the last few chains. Lady Ideal was fourth.
Of the six runners in the Telegraph Handicap, Merry Jest was favourite, while Peneu? and Papaponga were divided by only two tickets. When the tapes rose, Papaponga began very quickly, and, galloping very freely, won very easily from Merry jest, who, after a bad passage, just got up in time to heat Koodoo. Peneus was a good fourth. Lowry’s pair (Magna Charta and Eloquent) were heavily hacked for the Debutante Stakes. B. Morris, carrying 81b overweight, was put up on Magna Charta. This horse again misbehaved at the harrier, at the rise of which Spode jumped out four lengths clear. Once in the straight, Eloquent challenged, but Spode ran on well to bent her, with Magna Charta third. Polyphemus was a. good favourite for the Maharahara Welter, Tiega also coming in for solid backing. Fillette was first out. but Willow Wni Was soon rushed to the front and was four lengths clear of Polyphemus entering the straight. In a good race to the winning post, Polyphemus ran on gamely to heat hv half a length the fast Westbroke, with Willow Wai close up.
Racing concluded with the Kumeroa Welter, for which Epistle had the_ largest following, carrying thirty tickets more than Indian Sage, while Royal Mint, with just half the favourite’s total, was third favourite. Bank Draft was the- first to show out from ti good start-, with Mime, Salamis, and Epistle next. Bank Draft and Epistle turned .for home together, and over Hie final stages a good race eventuated. Epistle winning by half a neck from Salamis, with Indian Sage and Mime heads away. MARLBOROUGH FIRST DAY. BLENHEIM, Feb. 25. NOTES AND COMMENTS,
(By “Maecenas.”)
Excellent acceptances have been received for the Taranaki Trotting Club’s annual meeting, and a,successful day’s sport should eventuate. Of those engaged in the Maiden Handicap, Mary Audubon should go well, although she failed to show up at \Vanganpi. Bright Light may be her dangerous opponent. On Wanganui form it is hard to go beyond the chances of The Tiger and Peterson in the Waitara Handicap. Possibly Peterson may repeat his performance of Friday last at Wanganui; where he went really well. Signor mixed his gait at Wanganui, but, should he go a true race, he might prove a difficult proposition to beat in the XJrenui Handicap. Aggie Bell paced excellent races each day of the recent Wanganui meeting, and it is only a matter of her doing the same in the Omata Handicap to cause bother to the opposition. Blue Glen and Taipara are both very well, and if competitors in the Moturoa Handicap, should not, want for support m that event. The Taranaki Trotting Cup, to be decided to-morrow, should be an interesting contest. Wanganui form points to Kokiritea having good prospects, but Daphne Wildwood and But Buss may both give trouble. Sister Beatrice is a solid trotter, and if fancied for the Inglewood Handicap to-morrow should perform well. If reserved for this event Peterson should also go well. Jean Darling showed good form each day of the recent Wanganui meeting, and it would cause no surprise should she again go a good race in the Farewell Handicap to-morrow. King Abbey can run a fast mile and a half hurdle race, and for this reason will be well backed at the Te Aroha meeting on Saturday. Although she failed to win, Ber-' inthia registered a good performance at Takapuna last month, and if she repeats the same in the Trial Handicap at Te Aroha her opponents will be seriously troubled.
Considering he has a Great Northern Guineas to liis credit, King.Lu is well treated in the Somers Handicap at the Te Aroha meeting, and, although he has not raced l'or some time, he should perforin creditably. When Finelli ran at the Te Kuiti meeting a couple of weeks ago she looked rather on the robust side, but this fast mare should strip better at Te Aroha on Saturday. York Abbey has had a number of failures registered against him of late, but the hard courses were in a measure the cause of the defeats. This gelding; is very fast and is certain to run well at the Te Aroha meeting.
On the day prior to the Woodville meeting Oreum ran a mile on the Woodville track in less than 1.40—a wonderful gallop for a maiden performer. But on account of her past failures she was neglected in The Cup. It. Reetl is going to Te Aroha, where lie will ride F. Loomb’s team, compris_ ing Desert Glow, Finelli, Phaola, and Cantab, and in his capable hands all should run prominently. When opposed to good class “milers” at the recent Wanganui meeting Curraghmore ran excellent races, so it is only reasonable to expect this mare to do well m the Hot Springs Handicap at the Te Aroha meeting. When Phaola raced at Takapuna last month she bore a robust appearance, but nevertheless showed a lot of pace, and, with the advantage of that racing, must run prominently in the juvenile races at Te Aroha. A very useful field of horses is engaged in the Herries Memorial at Te Aroha on Saturday. On actual handicap, Gala Day (8.1) appears to be the pick. This gelding has only to reproduce the form lie showed in the last Wellington Chip to be well in the fighting line at the finish.
