VALUABLE ADDRESSES. ' The second conference of the year in connection with the Taranaki Division of the New Zealand Factory Managers’ Association was held at New Plymouth yesterday, when, after 'butter and cheese grading competitions at the Taranaki Producers’ Stores at Moturoa, members present met for luncheon at the kiosk on the beach and afterwards listened to four very valuable and interesting addresses by men of wide experience on subjects that are questions of the utmost importance to the industry generally. Over a hundred delegates were present from all parts of Taranaki.

On behalf of the staff, Mr. E. O. Robinson, chief grader, welcomed the company to the cool stores and made some remarks of great value on the question of grading, .showing something of the work done by the department. He also gave advice of value to managers on points they should endeavour to avoid, so that the standard of grading could .be the highest possible. THE CUiM/PEffTi IONS. ; There was a large entry for the butter and cheese grading, and consequently the competition was very keen and the placed men very close. Singleton (.Director of the. Dairy Division), “Quality in Butter and Cheese’’; Mr. P 1 .O i . Veale (Dairy Scientist, Haw era), “Tests for impurities iu Milk for Oieesemaiung" ; Mr (J. Site veil son (Government U racier), “Farm Dairy instructors”; and Mr. G. Smith, “Manufacture of Whey Butter. Before opening, the chairman (Mr. G. lhor,burn, Taranaki President of the Association) briefly welcomed delegates, stating that the object of the association was to secure for managers valuable assistance from the delivering of addresses by qualified men, and m consequence tUe conference had a distinctly educational value, in regard to dairy farm instructors, he hoped • farmers would co-operate .amicably with the men appointed by any company, realising that they were out to do all they could in the interests, of the industry. He referred to the bad practice grown up of factories overlapping and one taking cream rejected .by a neighbouring factory. He hoped instructors would straighten up suppliers so the trouble of overlapping could be out out. He hoped the Federation of Factories would take action iu these matters. He referred to the value of the conference at Pa-tea, both from an instructor’s and from a .bacteriological point oi\view and hoped that New Plymouth would be just as good. At the conclusion ol' the meeting the president expressed the thanks of the association to the Taranaki Prducers Company fob the use of the rooms, and to Mr, Singleton, Mr. Veale and departmental officers for their addresses. He also referred to the excellent work done by Mr. Woods, of Ngaere, the able and efficient secretary off the association, whose good work Went far; in making the great success of the association’s activities. These matters of appreciation were heartily endorsed by all present and the gathering then ter urinated.
