ICE IN THE HOME
A NEW INVENTION. BRITISH DOCTORS IMPRESSED. EVERY MAN HIS OWN REFRIGERATOR. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPY EIGHT. Received Feb. 26, 10.36 p.m. LONDON, Feb. 23. A remarkable invention was demonstrated to doctors and scientists at the Savoy Hotel. By the turning on of an electric switch a continuous supply of ice was produced. This should solve the problem of domestic refrigeration, as three kilowatt hours of electricity daily, and 120 gallons of water, costing; threepence daily, were enough for a household ice safe. This had three shelves at different temperatures, suitable for various produce. Sir William Arbuthnot Lane described the invention as an important contribution to public health. The basic idea is the application of the law of partial pressure of gases, discovered bv Dalton.
