Darling and Sons’ fire (see page five) was . one of the largest ever witnessed in the State. A strong wind and a poor water supply made the fight extremely difficultTen ’men were in the building at the time of the outbreak. All got away safely except two on the top floor, who escaped hv sliding down the grain chutes.
Hundreds of voluntary helpers assisted. These included women, who lumped bags of wheat. Large stacks of flour are still ablaze.
