COMMENTS BY “MAECENAS,”
WOODVILLE, Feb. 24
The Woodville Jockey Club was favoured with beautiful weather for the opening day of its autumn meeting, which took place before a. good attendance. Consequent on recent rains the race track was in perfect order.
Racing opened with the Oringi Hurdles, for which event Matu was the elect of backers, with Banjuke and Suspicion the best supported of the remainder. Purseproud was the early leader from Banjuke. Matu, and Suspicion. Racing down the hack, Matu and Banjuke led Suspicion, but coming to- the last jump Asleep went up to the leaders, and, although he lost ground at the fence, he won well from Banjuke and the unlucky Suspicion.
Lampyre, Hypnotic, land Wanderlust were best supported for the Maiden Stakes. When the barrier rose Wanderlust took charge from Lampyre and Sir Lucullus. The last-named fell after entering the straight, and Wanderlust wont on to- win from Lampyre and Hypnotic, with Bennanee a good fourth. Hypnotic showed promising form.
Tliero were only six starters for the Woodville Gup, and of them Novar claimed most support from hackers, with good support for Imperial Spark and Opa. The race is easily described, as the previously disappointing Oreum took charge from Good Sport, Opa, and Novar from the barrier rise, and, opening up a. big lead, she won very easily from the consistent Novar, with Opa ,an indifferent third and flood Sport fourtli. On the form lie showed at Wanganui, Nadarino should have been a good favourite for the County Hack Handicap, hut backers preferred Nash tori. The barrier lifted to a good start Nadariiio showing out first, but Bonideer soon took charge and was followed over most of the journey by Lady Ideal, Nadarino, and Newbury King. Unco in a line for the winning jiost Nadarino went to the front to ivin easily from Epistle, who dashed up near the post to beat Bonidcer and Bank Draft. Of the seven runners for the Ruahine Handicap, backers selected Kaiti as the best, with Peneus, Merry Jest, and Papaponga supported as written. Kaiti began quickest from Peneus, Merry Jest, and Papaponga, but. before turning into the straight. Poly piiemus had taken charge and, finishing well, won nicely from Kaiti, which ran on a. little better than Merry Jest and Papaponga. The last-named was a little unlucky. There was only one dividend in the Sapling Stakes, and the betting public made Spode favourite, with the Lowry “bracket” (Magna Charta and Lackland) also well supported. When the tapes rose Spode began quickly, while Magna Charta lost six lengths. At the end of three furlongs. Reed, on Spode. spelled his mount, and Comedic led. Before turning into the straight Magna Charta took the lead, hut was unable to withstand a strong challenge from Snode, who beat Magna. Charta. by half a length. Comedie was a poor third.
Of the eight contestants for the President’s Welter, Willow Wai had
the largest following, carrying almost twice the amount invested on Westbroke. From a good despatch, Willow Wai soon took charge, and led Grown Gem and Westhroke into the straight. With a furlong to go, Westbroke ran up to Willow Wai, but the last-named finished, the better, to beat Westbroke by half a length. Then followed Allmarimba and Fillette. The day concluded with the Victoria Hack Welter, and in a good pool, on the tote Indian Sage was a pronounced favourite When the barrier rose, Charleston was first to show out, but Royal Mint soon joined him, and the pair were followed by Break o’ Day and Tiega over the first half-mile. Break o’ Day went to the lead three furlongs from the post, but, once in the straight, Tiega assumed the lead, to win well from Indian Sage, which came from a long way back. Royal Mint was a good third and Strongholt fourth.

NOTES BY “MAECENAS.” Judged on the excellent nominations received, the Taranaki Trotting Club should have a most successful meeting on .Saturday next. The gear on Peter McDonald carried away at Wanganui on Monday. But for this mishap he would have acted as runner-up to The Tiger. Bieolour showed a. lot of speed in the early part of the principal raccA at the Wanganui trots, but tired badly over the last quarter of a mile. Sister Beatrice finished very fast in fourth place at Wanganui on Fri-
(lay, and those who witnessed her final effort- were fully prepared for her success on -Monday. On the opening; day of the Wanganui meeting, .L. G. Morris, who is well-known a>s a. rider of gallopers, gave a good exhibition by riding C-ora Tacks into second place. On Monday Morris was astride Why Worry when that m ft-re won, Kokiritea went a good race when he won the Trotting Onp at Wanganui, but his task was made much easier by reason of the fact- that his most dangerous opponent had had luck in the race. Douglas Nelson was a starter each day of the Wanganui meeting, but, like in many of bis former efforts, be gallops
ed most of the journey. This horse is a, menace in a race and should be barred from starting. ■Peterson registered a capital performance on the first day at Wanganui, 'and never put a foot wrong, but -on Monday he mixed badly at one stage of his race and lost much ground, but, striking his gait quickly, lie made up a lot of ground to finish third. Peterson will win further successes. While followers of the light harness sport do not patronise the gallops very freely, it can be truthfully stated that many keen owners of thoroughbred gallopers cannot be induced to visit a trotting meeting, let alone take a keen interest in the same.
In The Tiger, Mr. J. R|. Corrigan has a promising trotter. He won easily on the first day of the recent Wanganui meeting, and on Monday lie registered an even more impressive performance when he won again.
The Wanganui Trotting Club is a most unfortunate body, and for several years past has fought a, big uphill battle. But for most unfavourable weather during the morning of the opening day the elub must have had a fairly good meeting this year. That the had weather was responsible for limiting the attendance ami consequent betting is shown by the fact that less than £9OOO went through the t-otalisatoi 1 on Friday (cup day), whereas on Monday about £12,000 ttju# handled,.
