TENNIS
The clubs in the district have all taken ample "toll" of the good weather and courts have been very busy daily. Both the local clubs have been , successful and interesting matches with other clubs and these have all bpen enjoyed. If the present spell of good weather holds, it will make up for a lot of disappointment in the early part of the season. The tournament run by the Hawera Club at Christmas proved a shining success and did a lot of good to the game in the district. In* order to further popularise the Mountain House at Stratford, Mr. Beese Anderson, chairman of the County Council, urged the building of tennis courts there and, he added, in the future make the champions come up here to play their matches. AMERICAN PLAYEBS TOURING ABROAD. Arrangements have been made by the, United States Lawn Tennis Association to authorise a team to visit Australia for the championships. At least two of the best men . will come across to compete. In addition two will compete at the British and French Championships. This is good for the game and will give a fillip to it in these countries.
It. is interesting to learn that the financial position of the Association is the soundest in its history, their assets totalling 100,000 dollars. The profits last year from the National Singles amounted to 35,000 dollars and from the Davis Cup Challenge round about 6,000 dollars.
It will have been interesting to tennis enthusiasts to note that the German lady champion had expressed her intention to try and arrange a match with the winner of the Lenglen-Wills match. The French lady having won the match it will be of interest to see whether she would accept a challenge from the Fraulein.
