THE LEAGUE COUNCIL
QUESTION OF ENLARGEMENT.
BRITISH ATTITUDE NOT SETTLED. OBJECTION TO SPAIN’S CLAIM. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. LONDON, Feb. 19. The Minister for Foreign Affairs (Sir Austen Chamberlain), speaking at the foreign Press luncheon, said the Government had not decided on its attitude towards the enlargement of the Council of the League of Nations. It was not a question of creating a majority one way or the other, which would negative the aims of the League, whose duty it was to reconcile the Powers’ differences.
The diplomatic correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says it is clear that despite the adverse volume of opinion in the Dominions, the equally adverse decision of the Swedish Government, and the unfavourable attitude of Japan, some Governments still intend to press their own or other candidatures at the March session of the League.
The British attitude is unfavourable to a substantial increase in the permanent seats. It is least unfavourable, so far as the claimants are concerned, to Spain. Finally, it is against any increase until September.
