STERILISING THE UNFIT
STRINGENT SUPERVISION
NECESSARY
(BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) LONDON, Feb. 17. Canon Barnes’s modernistic speech has made him the centre of another controversy. Sir Arbuthnot Lane said he was glad the clergy was actively interested in reform which would gradually arrive through public opinion. He thought most medical men and educated classes were in favour of sterilising the unfit. Dr. Belfrage, secretary of the new Health Society, says: “The main fault lies in the unhealthy slum conditions and the hard lives of expectant mothers. Nevertheless, the society fully realises that uncontrolled propagation of the human race by mentally and physically deficient parents will always drag the wheels of progress. The question of sterilising needs most careful consideration, and must he carried out under stringent official supervision. It were better to segregate individuals who are obviously unfit and exercise control.”
