The Hawera Star.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1926. A PURE WATER SUPPLY.

Delivered every evening by 8 o’clock in Hewers, Mansis, Nonnanby, Qkaiawa, Eltham, Mangatoki, Kaponga, Alton, Hurleyville, Pate*, Waverley, Mokoia, Whakamara, Oban gal, Meremere, Fraser Road. and Ararat*.

Although there has been no serious complaint regarding the quality of the Hawera town water, it is none the less pleasing to have scientific assurance of the supply’s purity. The results of Mr P. O. Veale’s chemical analysis, which are printed elsewhere on this page, should allay the fears of those good folk—if there be any in our midst —who move through life in constant terror of being stalked by some hideous and malignantly-intentioned microbe, whose; attack is to be held at bay only by an armour of boiled water and sterilised drinking vessels. But it will be equally pleasant reading for the less hysterical section of the community, since the natural desire of every, householder, as of every town, is for a plentiful and pure water supply. There is n o> better safeguard of health, unless it be a pure milk supply. In Taranaki the milk supply cannot be questioned, and Mr Veale s findings prove that, in Hawera, neither can the water supply. If that were as abundant as it is pure, the town would be in an enviable position. As it. is, the favourable report upon the chemical content of the water should not be lost sight of when- the attractions of Hawera are being listed. The town has a reputation for elean streets, attractive gardens, and a healthy moral tone. To these just causes for pride may now be added a notably pure water supply. We who enjoy it may think that a trifling asset; some who live in less favoured towns would tell us otherwise.
