SUMS.

When mother makes me do my sums, I sit for hours and hours, And try my hardest not to see' The garden and" the flowers, And not to watch the kittens play, Nor listen to the noise The locust makes that’s just been caught By naughty little boys; Nor wonder if it’s long before The picnic day will come, And then I find I haven’t done A quarter of my sum. I lick my pencil very hard, And start again—but oo! I sometimes wish I was a bird, Who hasn’t sums to do. —RUTH M. BEDFORD.
