Most of the bush fires have now either burned down to smouldering embers, or have been diverted, into places where they can do little damage to life and property. Rain is needed to put an end to the danger, but the meteorologist says, that none' is in sight. Already £50,000 has been subscribed in the city. In rhe stricken area local committees are working earnestly to attend to the immediate wants of those dispossessed and others needing assistance.

Eleven missing men are accounted for and it is thought that the full casualty list is now known. All the injured ex.pt two young children of the Hodge family are reported to- be out of danger and one is making good progress. .
