NOTES ON THE RACING

(By Maecenas.) WANGANUI, Feb. 18

Unlike many race meetings held of late, the Wanganui Jockey Club was favoured with a. nice day for the opening of its autumn meeting, which took place before a large attendance. Like the majority of race meetings held of late, the tote figures for the day showed a decline—in this case of £1057 as compared with the corresponding dav of last year.

The first few furlongs of the Cup race were not fast, hut the time for the full distance (3.01-5) was particularly good The course was in its best order to-day.

Racing opened with the Maiden Handicap, which event did not produce a verjj promising lot, although a couple of the starters should pay their way. White Fang came from, the East Coast with a great reputation, and finished up a £350 better favourite than Tannadicc, with Midnight Camp and Pardon best supported of the other runner®. Midnight Camp he. gan quickly and led White Fang into the straight, with Tannadice close up. In the straight White Fang took charge, hut R. Reed, on Tannadicc, outrode the rider of White Fang to beat him by a, neck, while Great Day with a late run beat Midnight Camp. A particularly strong class went to the post for the Stewards’ Handicap, and in a good betting race Fool’s Paradise (£590), Imperial Spark (£580) and Glenross (£560) wore evenly supported. 'Hie tapes rose to a good start, the first to show out being Willow Wai, which led out of the straight from The Lamb, Fool’s Paradise, and Filette. Racing down the back Willow Wai was leading Fool’s Paradise, 'l’lie Lamb, and Yoma. Turning into the straight Willow Wai was just in front of Yoma. Fool’s Paradise and Glenross. hut over the last furlong Willow Wai tired and, in a good finish. Glenross won well hy half a length from The Lamb, with Fool’s Paradise and Imperial Spark close up The last-named was unlucky.

Taking the runners all round, the hurdlers were not up to “open” class. Bettors made Many Colours first choice, hut San Fera and Mountain Bell were almost as well supported. Ratapiko led over the initial jump, hut at the next San Fera had taken charge. Passing the stand, San Fera and Mountain Bell led Ratapiko and Comedy Prince. There was little between Pan Fera and Mountain Bell two furlongs from home, at which stage Sail Fera. tired. Coinedv Prince passed Mountain Bell before jumping the final obstacle, and went on to heat Mountain Bell hy two lengths, with Soli Fera and Ratapiko third and fourth.

Of tlio starters for the Victory Welter, Anklet claimed most admirers on the tote, carrying £250 more than Catcall and Bonhomme, which pair were divided hv eight tickets. When the tapes rose Rangi Sarto led from Catcall, Bonhomme and Kilhurn. fn the back straight Bonhomme took the lead, followed by Rangi Sarto, Anklet,

Catcall and Kilburn. Two furlongs from the post Bonhomme was just in front of Kilburn and Lady Anstruther. The last-named took the lead in the straight, but over the last half-furlong Mountain Top and Catcall came fast, and in a good race Mountain Top beat Catcall by a nose, with Indian Sage and Kilburn next. Although the field for the Wanganui Cup fell short of many of its predecessors, to-day’s race was quite a good one when we consider the poor nomina_ tious received. Enthusiasm (£1250) was a big favourite, with Star Ranger (£720), Income (£710), and Clarinda (£695) supported in the order written. From a good start Clarinda went out as pacemaker, followed by Vaward, Opa, and Novar. At the stand Clarinda was still the pilot, with Vaward, and Opa next. Then followed Income and Novar. Half-a-mile from the winning post Clarinda was just in front of Opa, Vaward. and Income. At the home turn Opa and Clarinda were together in front from Novar and Income. Over the last furlong Income ran on best, to win by a short length from Novar, which beat Star Ranger by the same distance. Then followed Opa, Enthusiasm, and Clarinda.

Seatown carried 185 more tickets than Elthein for the Juvenile, Spode, with nearly half the favourite’s total, being the only other runner backed to any extent. Spode began quickly and led Raukura and Seatown into the straight. Once in a] ine for the winning post Seatown cut the leaders down, to win well from Spode, who only heat Raukura, Jemidar, and Elthein. The last-named may do better on Saturday.

Bettors made Horomea a hundred pounds better favourite than Nadarino for the Petre Hack, while Roburite carried within a hundred of Nadarino. When the tapes rose, Nadarino was quickest out, but Argue soon got to the lead, and over the early stages was followed by Nadarino, Roburite, and Athenry. Ytaclng Into the straight Argue was just in front of acla/rino, and, as the pair were fighting a great duel, they allowed Reed to get Nadarino througn next to the rails and heat Roburite by a neck, with Argue a head away, and Royal Elm fourth. A day of capital racing concluded with the Flying Handicap, and in a big pool on the totalisator First Acre (£825) ivas the actual favourite from Deluge (£820) and Licinius (£790). As usual, Tamatete began brilliantly and led over the early stage from Kaiti, Black Cat, aud Licinius. With the exception that Licinius and Standard took up third and fourth positions, there Avas little alteration into the straight. At the home turn Tamatete gained a further advantage, and, well handled by McCarten, Tamatete ran on better than generally expected, to heat Kaiti by a good neck, with Licinius and Black Cat very close up. TOLAGA BAY RACES. GISBORNE, Feb. 18. The Tolaga. Bay annual races Avere held to-day. The going was good and the weather was fine.
