CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY AT DUNEDIN.

(BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION, ) DUNEDIN, Feb. 18. The absence of wind and a dull sky made perfect golfing conditions at Balmacewan. During the night there was heavy rain, but the greens were good and the fairways easy. At 9.30 the first pair got away in the Otago professional championship (72 hole si. Concurrently were played the competitions for the Myers Challenge Cup (36 holes) and the second stroke handicap (36 holes). J. Mclntosh (Hutt) played good go It, finishing with 73. The next best was j R. Galloway (Palmerston North) with 74In the afternoon there was bright sunshine and good cards were handed in. There was ideal golfing conditions, a verv slight breeze blowing. Blair holed a 50 yards mashie at the 16th for a thrtee. A. J. Shaw played a failgame out, which he did in 35, coming home in 37. His driving was a feature of the afternoon’s play. His average drive all day was 240 yards, and he generally got on the greens in two, but had no luck with his putts. -T. Mclntosh was also driving a long ball. He settled down to steady golf and was wefi worth watching. Another professional worthy of mention for his consistency all day was J. R. Galloway (Palmerston North).
