“WHILE ON DUTY.’’
SAN FRANCISCO. Jan. 27
Wives and dependents of bootleggers gO' throiihg some anxious times; but they are as well, if not better guarded against actual privation than the connections of honest citizens. This state of affairs is due to the' operations of various insurance companies which do business with the men who handle prohibited liquor. The West Coast Bootleggers ’lnsurance, for instance, pays £2OOO for accidental death while on duty. But the payment to secure this benefit is £2 a week.
For 17s a week a bootlegger can be sure of having paid to his credit £2 a day for any period he serves in gaol. This company does a big business. Its premiums for 1925 amounted to £500,000.
