JAPANESE TRAINING SHIP. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 18. The Japanese training ship Iwate arrived from Sydney shortly before eight o’clock this morning. A salute of welcome was fired from Point Jerningharh. The Iwate remains here until Tuesday, then goes to Auckland, remaining there until March 3. There are 95 cadets on board, who are being instructed in navigation and engineering. There are also eighteen young doctors. A number of official visits were paid to-day.
PRIME MINISTER’S STRENUOUS TRIP.
GISBORNE, Feb. 18
The Prime Minister and party arrived at Gisborne shortly before 7.30 p.m yesterday. Mr Coates had experienced a strenuous day on the coast yesterday, where he carried out a lengthy programme. The party left Gisborne at 9.15 a.m. to-day by car for Napier, where it will remain tonight. The members will reach Wellington to-morrow night. RECORDS ACHIEVED AT ASHBURTON. ASHBURTON. Feb. 18. Schblz ran in 7 3-5 sec. the 75 yards race yesterday, this equalls the world’s record. G. Hewson lowered his own Canterbury amateur unpaced mile cycling record of 2 20 4-5 by four seconds, A' SHORT-LIVED STRIKE. WHANGAREI, Feb. 18. The strike of all hands at the Hikurangi Coal Company’s mine, which, commenced on Monday afternoon, was short-lived. A conference of the representatives of all parties concerned met yesterday and reached an agreement whereby the two truckers dismissed will !>a reinstated, with a provision that they work apart. Last night a meeting of the Hlknrangi Miners’ Union -ndorsed the agreement by 110 votes to four, and the miners resumed work this morning.
