ELTHAM.

DEPARTURE OF PIPE BAND. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The Eltham Pipe Band departed yesterday morning, en route to Dunedin, where it is competing in the pipe band contest. The members were given an enthusiastic send-off at the railway station, where a large crowd of citizens gathered. _ ~ The Mayor, Mr I. J. Bridger, m a short speech, said that it was very satisfactorv to think that a pipe band comprised'entirely of local players was able to make all arrangements whereby it was able to compete in such an important contest as that arranged at 'Dunedin. The members had practised assiduously for the past three months, and no doubt they had a reasonable chance of success. He sincerely hoped that the band would bring back the coveted trophy, which it .undoubtedly deserved to win. The fact that the citizens had subscribed sufficient to pay all travelling and board expenses was a good indication that the citizens were interested' in the band and wished it success and an enjoyable trip. At the Mayor’s call, the band was given three hearty cheers, with musical honours. Mr S. Dunbar, president of the band, also spoke, and said that he felt quite sure it would give a good account of itself. It deserved to win, considering the interest the individual members had shown in a,ll their preparations. Mr J. Campbell travelled with the band as manager, Mr D. Clements as drum major, and Mr J. Crawford as pipe major. C.E.M.S.. CLUB. A special, meeting of the C.E.M.S. Club was held last evening to consider a notice of motion “ That the rebate of ten shillings hitherto allowed on the annual subscription be discontinued and the full amount of £1 10s collected. ’ ’

Mr J. Cocker, president, occupied the chair. The motion was discussed at considerable length, and was afterwards unanimously rejected.
