FIRE AT HASTINGS

(.BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION./ HASTINGS, Feb. 15.

This morning a seven-roomed house owned by C. W. Tipping and occupied by All's Lawton as a boardinghouse, situated in the commercial centre of the town, was gutted by fire. The flames had a good hold when discovered and the occupants escaped in what they stood up in. When the brigade arrived the flames had full charge, but the outbreak was confined to the area of origin and th© brigade made a. fine save of the shops of Poll (photographer) and Lambert (engineer) on either side. The insurances were: Furniture and effects £l5O in the Alliance; house,. £6OO in the National. SEQUEL TO POLICE RAID. WELLINGTON, Feb. 15, The sequel to the police raid in Homing Street on Friday took place in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. The owner of the premises was fined £25, and thirteen others who were found on the premises were fined sums ranging from £5 to £3 each. The fines totalled £9O. FIRE AT NORSEWOOD. DANNEVIRKE, Feb. 15. A fire at Norse wood on Sunday morning destroyed J. Mathia’s draper’s shop, a'so -the branch offices of Knight and Dunn, solicitors, and the branch office of the Bank of New South Wales. Details of the insurances are not available. but Mathia’s shop and stock was covered in the Atlas Office. BALLOT PAPER TORN UP. WELLINGTON, Feb, 15. In the Magistrate’s Court this morning a woman, whose name was suppressed. was charged with fraudnlentlv destroving a ballot paper. The' electoral officer for Avon gave evidence that the woman said she had made a. mistake in casting her vote. She tore up the ballot paper and refused to give it up. Further hearing . was adjourned to have certain points cleared., HIGHWAY BY-LAW BROKEN. PALMERSTON N., Feb. 15. At the Magistrate’s Court, five owners of motor lorries were fined each £2 and ordered to pay costs for having caused motor Irories of a greater weight than five tons, inclusive of load, to be on the main highway at Paremata when such loads were prohibited.
