Eert Smith and Nunse Smith left Hawera by the express on Sa.turda yto meet the Tainui at Wellington to-day. Mrs. Smith’s two sisters, the Misses Heed, are on board and intend to' settle at P'apakura, Auckland, in the meantime the Misses Reed will be the guests of Mrs. Smith at Hawera. for an extended holiday and re>st. The death occurred in New Plymouth early yesterday morning of Mrs Oalcott, wife of Commissioner Oalcott, of the Salvation Army. Commissioner and Mrs. Oalcott were in charge of the Salvation Army work in Hawera some years ago—they were here at the time of the influenza epidemic —and very sincere sympathy will be felt in this district with the Commissioner and his seven children. The Hawera Salvation Army band as going to New Plymouth to assist at the funeral. to-morrow. The many friends of Mr Thomas Bowen and family will regret to hear of the death of Airs Bowen, which occurred at Craigholm Hospital yesterday, at the age of 40 years. Born at Opunake, Airs Bowen was a daughter of Air and Airs J. J. Connell, of Hawera, well and favourably known old residents throughout Taranaki. In musical circles Airs Bowen was well known as an accomplished pianiste and violinist, and will lie remembered not only for her talent, but also for her ready response to any request made for her services in a charitable or other worthy cause. The late Airs Bowen is survived bv her husband and two sons, aged eight and ten years respectively, and a daughter aged 13 years, to whom the sympathy of a wide circle of friends will he extended.
