NEW MOTOR-LINERS.

SHAW, SAVILL ENTERPRISE

SHORTER TRIP TO DOMINION.

LONDON, Jan. 29. From Loudon to New Zealand in 30 days by motor-ship via the Panama Canal will be the result of the Shaw Sayil’ Company’s latest shipbuilding venture.

The company has invited tenders from leading British builders for the construction of two motor liners of 20,000 tons, and with a speed of 17 knots, as compared with the existing speed of 13 knots. This will reduce the passage from 37 to 30 days. The new vessel will carry 250 firstc’ass and 700 third-class passengers. There will be 10.000 tons of refrigerated * space. Probably the building will take ; wo years. A further instance of the progress of the motor-ship' is evidenced by the fact that Furness, Withy has just placed contracts with British yards for four motor cargo vessels of 10,000 tons and ■i speed of 13 knots. The shipping correspondent of the Times points out that the satisfactory feature of these developments consists 'n the fact- that British shipyards are making up the fee way in Diesel-engined shins, and are'ousting Continental eom•retitors.
