A POLICE RAID.
FOURTEEN CHINESE ARRESTED.
(BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Eeb. 13.
The police raided a house in Haining Street and fourteen Chinese were arrested. One of them, Ah Wall, was charged with keeping a common gaming house and three others with assisting in the management thereof. Over £IOOO was seized, one player having over £450 in his possession when arrested. It is understood that only Chinamen participated in the game at this particular house. To-day being the Chinese New Year, the men will not appear in court till Monday. Ah Wah was not arrested till after the others had been surprised. He was just going back to the house with a rooster bought for to-day’s dinner, and when the police asked him to accompany him to the station he was loud in his protestations of innocence, while the screeching fowl and chattering laughing street-arabs made up a procession amusing to the idlers who quickly gathered to see the fun.
