NURSE’S RESCUE.
GIRL RESTORED TO LIFE
COOLANGATTA, Jan. 25. A somewhat remarkable rescue from drowning is reported from Tweed Heads. While Nurse Russell was walking in the vicinity of Back Channel at Monastery Hill, Tweed Heads, on Sunday afternoon, she noticed what appeared to he the body of a child floating face downwards in the water some distance from the bank. Although unable to swim, Nurse Russell unhesitatingly entered the water fully clothed. After wading out into the water, which, reached to her neck, she succeeded in grasping the child, and, with the assistance of an elderly man named Knight, who had arrived on the scene in response to her cries, brought the. child to the bank. The body was stiff and discoloured, apparently through long immersion in the water. The nurse immediately commenced first aid treatment .and after half an hour’s work her efforts were rewarded by sighs of returning life. The child revived sufficiently to be conveyed to her home, showing little or no ill-effects from her immersion. The child, whose . name was Ivy Murphy, nine, could give no explanation of the occurrence other than stating that she had intended to swim across the channel, and it is not known how long she was in the water befor© Nurse Russell noticed her.
