ABOLITION ISSUE
COUNTRY PARTY’S OBJECTION
ALTERATION TO COK.7'.'7 PLOPLE NOT CONSULTED. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received Feb. 13, 11.22 a.m. SYDNEY, Feb. 13. A meeting of the State Parliamentary Country Party discussed the proposal of the Government to abolish the Legislative Council. It suggested a memorial to tne King. The consensus of opinion was that the real issue was not so much the abolition of the council as the method adopted by the pres ent Government to make what is a violent change in the constitution of the State, without recognising the right of the people to be considered. An appeal to the King in the form of a memorial was necessary and was justified. GOVERNMENT SUSTAINS ANOTHER DEFEAT. PARIS, Feb. 11. The Minister for Finance (M. Downier) refused to accept the Finance Committee’s suggestion to place a new tax on agricultural profits. The committee insisted, and this resulted in the Government being defeated by 270 votes to 240.
The Premier (M. Briand) announces that he hopes next week to submit proposals to balance the Budget.
