CROOK FOILED.
VALUABLE PICTURES SAVED
CHARWOMAN WAS FIRM
LONDON, Jan. 28. Mrs Bramley, a charwoman employed at St. George’s Gallery, Hanover Square, foiled an international crook who specialises in the theft of valuable pictures. The crook, a. we'l-dressed and plaus-ibly-spoken man, arrived at 8 a.m. at the gallery, where, a loan exhibition is being held of works, valued at £IOOO each, by Sir William Orpen, Sir John Laver.v, and Mr Frank Braugwyn. Water colours for sale also are on view.
Telling Mrs Bnunley that he had purchased several water colours, and had the manager’s permission to remove them in order to catch an early Continental train, the crook offered her £1 to assist him in packing them. Mrs 'B ram lev remained obdurate, and finally, on the crook assuming a threatening attitude, hanged the door in his fare.
