HAWERA CHILDREN’S OUTING

One of the longest trains to reave the station pulled out of Ha were y •- -eidav morning conveying the combined Hawera District Public* Schools . children. tethers and parents on their annual picnic to Moturoa Reach. the train comprised 20 carriages, and tanned well over 1000 passengers. After missing through a slight shovei ot rain, near Inglewood, the picnickers arrived at New Plymouth soon after ii ©“clock, where they were treated with most glorious weather conditions, and a very enjoyable day was spent by aU in surf-bathing, motor launch trips, and, by the courtesy of the officers m charge, most of the children were shown over the s.s. Wil-laston, which Happened to be in port -discharging cargo of motor spirit. , . The committee of the joint schools Hawera High, Hawera Main, Tawhiti, and Whareroa—had everything well arranged and handled the turnout without a hitch and without mishap. Ihe committee wishes to extend its special thanks to Messrs Pickering Bros., Ltd., of “Fairy Wonder,” for donating 28 prizes for competitions among the children, to the officers of the M Biaston for courtesy shown to th© children, to Mr Coad, the genial and painstaking caretaker at the beach, the secretary (Mr R. Ellis), of the Ngamotu Beach Committee, in arranging eevrythmg at New Plymouth, in readiness for the party, to Messrs Levin and Go., John.ston and Co., Burgess, Fraser and Co., R, F. Morrissey, S. J. Catrail, Goodwin Davey, R. T. Bullock, Mr Gihbes, and Dr. Thomson for donations of provisions. It wishes to especially thank Guard Bicknell, who was in charge of the train, on the efficient and obliging manner in which he carried out ms arduous duties, which undoubtedly called for a good deal of patience and tact. There was quite a busy scene at the Hawera station on the return of the party at 8.30 p.m.
