THE ENERGETIC DAY.
'Phis is the story of a little Day who was verv energetic. If he had been at school. I expect he would have been top of liis class, for ho would have gone on learning after school-hours when all the other pupils were at play. But he was not at school! His duty was to come into the world once a year. That’s all! The little Day would have loved to have been on duty all the time. (Really, there are people like this, although you mav not believe it. They hate holidays!) But this was not allowed. Each Day had to take his share. ‘‘l must make the most of my tune, that’s all,” said the energetic little Dav. . Then quite a brainy idea came to him, for bifiiny ideas come more often to energetic people than lazy ones, you know'. The little Day’s idea was that he should employ his time keeping the face of the sun polished, so that the world would remain lighter and the hours that ho was on earth seem longer. Bo he took a cloth woven of countless spiders’ v'ebs, and gave the sun’s face a good rub. And as soon as it began to cloud over—the sun’s face never remains bright for very long—lie got busy with his cl ith again and polished it up. Not once did lie allow it to get dark! The people of the w'orld w'cre surprised, and very pleased, v'hcn they saw how light it was keeping. They found they could stay later at their games, or gardening, or whatever their pet hobbv Happened to be. But at last ’the little -Day’s strength gave out and he had to put away his cloth. Then darkness came on.
All the same, the people were very grateful to the little Day for having given them so much light. “I’ll make the most of my time like that each year I come to earth,” the little Day decided. And he has remained faithful to his word! We call him the Longest Day, which is a very nice title for a day to have, don’t you think? Don’t you wish we had more than one energetic Day iu the year ? Then perhaps we’d have longer for our games, and we wouldn’t have to come in from the garden, just because the Hun has gone to bed.
