UNPRECEDENTED SPEED.

* duo WOli DS A Mil's UTE. IS JEW ATLANTIC CABLE. Another challenge for the supremacy in traiis-oceanic communication between cables and wireless is contained in the recent announcement of the making of a new trans-Atlantic cable which is to connect London and New Yorky via Newfoundland, and is to be laid down early this year, reports the Manchester (1 uardian. •Estimate,! to cost over Jive millions sterling, this new submarine link, it is claimed; will not only lie workable at the liuiiorto unheard-of speed of 25(X) letters or 500 words a minute both ways simultaneously, but will also, as in the Murray Multiplex system, permit several channels or separate circuits to lie operated at the same lime without in any way interfering u it h each other. Tim* remarkable increase in speed is made possible by what is known as “inductive loading,” which is carried out in this instance by wrapping the co. e of the cable in a new alloy of iron and nickel known as “permalloy,” which ‘permits the electric impulses to follow each other in more rapid succes_ sion. The first of these new type cables was laid in the spring of 1925. and connects New York with the Azores, where branch cables connect with Rome and Madrid. When in full operation this new addition to our trans-Atlantic communication is expected to have a far-reaching effect on present cable rates.
