THE HAWERA OLUB,
Affairs in the club have shown little progress of late and only a comparaLively lew of the members have kept up play. The new season is approaching and a programme should be mapped out and submitted to. a general meeting. And this should be called at the very earliest possible date.
HLTHAM. A goodi year is expected by the committee of the Eltham Golf Club' in the coming season. The course is in capital order andj ready to open practically at any time. This is expected to be fixed early, in view of Easter early in April. ft MANAIA. A fine impetus was imparted to the Manaia Golf Olub by the influx of members last year, and more progress was shown in the affairs of th© club than for many a day. The neat new club house is a great asset and the decision to build was th© best ever made in the history of the club. PATE A. The course has been kept better during the summer season than ever before. Part of it at least has looked, quite playable and good all the time, and as a fact some of the enthusiasts have had some summer play. The, prospects for th© coming season are of the brightest. Though the British professional golfer is always attracted to America by the belief that he will be a great deal better off there, he does not lack opportunities to make “big” money in Engand. During the season prizes amounting to £IO,OOO are offered; and though it is only possible for one man to win a part of this, say £ISOO, it is a remarkable fact- that the money comes rolling in from all sorts of unsuspected sources to th© successful player. It is the opinion of George Duncan that th© young player who makes himself really first-class can earn £SOOO a year in England., The income of Water Hagen ha's! never been' higher than this.

Haggitt, the donor of the cup, whose sudden death was a painful shock to members of the Invercargill / Golf Club, would have been delighted at the interest shown in the competition for Ills handsome trophy, and his absence from the field will be keenly felt by the players. . The cup will bo valued all the mere, however, because of -its association with Ms name.
The winter golf season on the Monte Carlo course, situated at Mont Agel, 3000 feet above the Mediterranean, has opened. There is general comment .on the great improvement in the fairways and putting greens. The altitude of the course makes its upkeep difficult, the cost of transporting sand, manure, and, other essentials being probably a record for any golf club.
The Professional Golfers’ Association of England have again decided to limit the golf test for the tournaments next season to one round. TMs arrangement was made last year with a view to reducing the expenses of the player, and in this way it succeeded,
