THE MODERN BOY
I>r. Cyril Norwood, .Master of Marlborough College, Wiltshire, who is succeeding the Rev. Lionel Ford (DeanDesignate of York) as the headmaster of Harrow School, said recently to a Daily Mail reporter. The modern boy is a line fellow. You can trust him far more than, you can trust the modern mail. Unfortunately, the war lias affected his nerves. There is something subtly wrong with the nerves of the lx>y born during the war. The nerves of the boy born after the war, who will be arriving at school in 1927, will be even worse, I am afraid. He will have to be handled carefully. Dr. Norwood thinks the boy of today is so much more civilised than his father was that the birch is going out of fashion. He said : “Swishing” 'is brutal—a relic of the more barbarous public schools of the 19th century. Caning is quite severe enough. 1 am sure that “swishing” will soon be altogether a thing of the past. I do not know if it is still done at Harrow. If it is. I ’shall have to think very seriously about it. >
Talking of the success of boys, he said : It is a curious tiling that boys who reach positions of eminence in school often do not succeed so well in after life. At the age of 23 the boys who were below them have drawn level. At 30 they are. in front. The bo.v who develops slowly may succeed better than the boy who reaches his climax at school.
