SUGAR BEET.
DEVELOPMENT OF BRITISH
INDUSTRY
BY GABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT Received Feb. 10, noon. LONDON, Feb. 9.
The progress of the sugar beet industry in Britain under Government support was reported upon by the Hon. Mr. Guinness in the House of Commons.
The Hon. Mr. Guinness stated that the approximate acreage for growth was now 128.000 acres. This was almost sufficient to keep fifteen factories; built or shortly to be completed, working at full capacity. Two new factory schemes were being considered and for these separate acreage arrangements would be required. The gross subsidy paid to this industry during the last financial year was £509,000. Tt was estimated that £1.250,000 would be paid during the current year and £2,500,000 the next year.—Renter.
