SWIMMING

AUSTRALIAN VISITORS. The enterprising- Waitemata ming Club (Auckland) has invited Doyle, Christie, and Kirkland from Australia to compote in Auckland, and they arc expected to arrive about March .15. Bv winning the 100 yards New South Wales championship recently in 541-5 see., Doyle, who is still in his teens, placed himself among the best sprinters the world has known. Dr. Kirkland was second. Be represented Australia at the 1920 Olympic Games, and is sprinting as well as ever after his lengthy retirement from competition. Two weeks ago he made a new Australasian record of 70 2-ssec, for 100 yards backstroke. Next to Charlton, Christie has long been the best of Australia's distance men. His latest successes are the 440 yards and 880 yards New South Wales championships, won in smin 33 3-ssee and llmin 47 2-ssec respectively.

New Zealanders will have to improve somewhat yet ’to equal Australian times. Doyle, who cut over 100 yards in 54 l-ssec in Sydney recently, the fastest time ever recorded for the dislance by an Australian, is still under 20 years of age. and looks like assuming the mantle of Charlton. He is certainly the most prominent swimmer south of tlie Line at the present time His time for the 100 yards is 4 l-ssec better than the New Zealand record, but against this must be put the fact that Sydney water is quite 2sec better
