JANUARY’S RAINFALL.
M ETKOR 0 LOG IST’S SUMMARY. (by TELEGHaPK PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Eeb. 5. The Director of th e Meteorological Bureau (Rev. D. G. Bates) supplies the following summary of the weather for the month of January:— “The month of January opened with strong southerly winds and cold, squally aud showery conditions prevailed on the Ist and 2nd over most of the Dominion, the effect of a severe disturbance developed off the East- Coast. Thereafter, however, the temperatures were more in keeping with the season, and though occasional spells of urn settled wet conditions were experienced. warm 'and fair weather predominated. ‘‘Between the 9th and the 12th an ax-tropical disturbance, which moved down the western coast, brought some good rains to both islands. This was particularly beneficial to Central Otago in terminating the long spell of dry weather. The most unsettled period during the month was generally experienced between the 20th and the 24th. “The North Island, and particularly the northern districts, was. under the influence of a cyclone passing in the north on the 21st and 22nd. and a severe easterly gale with heavy rain inflicted considerable damage on orchards and gardens in northern districts. .At the same time tho storm area passing in tho south caused northerly gales and boisterous conditions over the South Island. Our observer at Pokororo, in the Nelson district, reported that 8.21 inches of rain fell in ten hours, causing a record flood. “The total rainfall for the month was above the average in all hut- the East Coast districts, and the deficiency there wasjiot so serious as in the previous month, so that conditions generally seem to have been favourable td farming pursuit*.
