Following the policy of the Minister ■of Railways that administrative officers shall widen their knowledge of .railway affairs by travel abroad, Mr F. C. Widdup, Chief Engineer of Railways, leaves shortly for Australia, England, and the Continent, returning through America. He will be absent for nine months investigating matters associated with this special branch of the work, reports onr Wellington correspondent. At one of the most vital meetings in its history, the Wanganui Harbour Board last night decided on radical progressive measures. The Kaione is to be laid aside—sold if possible—and a new dredge will be acquired, while to deepen the entrance and concentrate the current at the river mouth a half-tidi' training wall is to be built between the moles. These decisions were reached at a special meeting called to consider Mr. Blair Mason’s latest report, which was considerably criticised, though its recommendation that the Kaione be discarded was endorsed;— Wanganui Chronicle.
