FOOD FOR JAPAN.
_ RICE SHORTAGE. “PLANT CHESTNUT TREES.” TOICIO, Jan. 27. Chestnuts as food to eke out the rice supply of Japan, which is shrinking as Lhe population increases, are being advocated by Dr. Irie, the chief of the Forestry Bureau, who has started a “Plant Chestnuts” campaign, with official hacking. Dr. Irie states that in many sections of Japan chestnut trees will grow well and vield heavily, on an average of one gallon, dry weight, in chestnuts per year, the nourishment value of dried chestnuts being five limes That of rice. Within a period of 10 years he desires to see 150.000.000 chestnut trees growi nr: op what is now waste land, the vield from which will he 15,000,000 bushels of nuts. Last vear. according to the Department of Agriculture. Japan consumed 335.000.000 bushels of rice, an increase over the year before of 6,000.000.
