ELY IN STRIKE CLASH. YOLUNTEERS ATTACKEJ). BRISBANE, Jan. 9. The first disturbance arising out of the river craft strike took place between strikers and volunteers at the Brisbane Tug Company’s wharf yesterday afternoon. The timely arrival of the police prevented an ugly situation. The first stage of the disturbance took place on the roadway leading to the wharf, where the excursion steamer Doomba. was berthed. This was between two men. Shortly afterwards a number of men, armed with stones and bottles, invaded the wharf and attacked members of the volunteer crew. After many Mows had been exchanged, bricks and bottles were hurled through the air. . A motor car, which had brought Captain Johnson, of the Brisbane Tug Company, to the vessel, was the target for in an v bottles. The volunteers, although outnumbered, bravely stood their ground, but were in a serious plight when the |K>licc reached the scene and the strikers withdrew. One volunteer, Edwin Goodwin, employed as a steward by the company, was badly mauled. A strike council has been formed to deal with the strike. It is feared in some circles that the whole railway service may become affected by the dispute.
