HR.EIOTTO'N OF ASSEiMBUY WORKS. DEPUTATION TO GOVERNMENT. (RY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) IVEDDINGTON 1 , Jan. 29. The motor trade luiis, taken alarm at the announcement that General Motors, Did., is about to establish large works at Pet one to carry on. assembly work, and a deputation representing the bodybuilders of New Zealand, waited on the Prime Minister (the lit. Hon. «D G. Coates) and the Hon. W. Eownie Stewart (Minister for Customs) to-day. The deputation put forward the following •suggestions:—Unassembled bodies, to bo7ai-.ses.sed as motor bodies ; strict enforcement of preferential rates and conditions, a .stipulation that every three completed cars or bodies (assembled or unassembled) .shall he accompanied by one chassis; the necessity lor the enforcement of legislation passed for the suppression of trusts and combines in the interests of secondary industries; the protection of the legitimate British manufacturer against the use now being made of Canada by American importers to defeat British preference. The Prime Minister said that the Government would have to look very carefully into the representationsmade. Mr. Downie Stewart was going to see the other parties, and the best course to take was to defer giving a reply until the Government had heard from all.
