IN BANKRUPTCY.
STRATFORD LAD-0 U REIR S FAILURE-. A meeting of creditors called at New Plymoth on Monday afternoon in the bankrupt estate of James M.’Neil, la-b----omer, of Stratford, lapsed for want of a. quorum, but the Deputy Official Assignee (Mr. J. S. S'. Medley) examined the .bankrupt under oath. Bankrupt’s .■schedule showed debts to unsecured creditors amounting to £'l62 8s 3d. while there were no assets, says the Herald.

The following written statement was submitted by -bankrupt, who 1 was represented by Mr. Truby King : —“About three years ago I was working in and around Stratford, doing mainly casual work as a labourer. Work was more o: loss intermittent and as .1 had a wile and family to support 1 got into debt. About June, 1923. 1 obtained, work share-mi Iking for Air. '! ruby King at Mangatoki, and wr.i> there lor over two years. 1 paid off some of my back accounts and would probably have been able to pay all but tor being harassed by continual illnesses among the family. My wife had to undergo a serious operation, necessitating heavy medical and nursing expenses. In August of 1-ast year J. gave up the sharemi Iking job and removed to-Stratford, since when 1 have been employed at casual labour as it offered. (Awing to the wet and unfavourable .spring I have barely been able to earn enough to -support my wile and family of -four children. One of my creditors recently had a. judgment summons issued against- me and I realised then that as there was no nossibility of my discharging my debts in my present circumstances the only course open tome wa.s to file, which i wa.s reluctantly obliged to do. 1 have no assets and regret that/ .1 am unable to make any offer to my creditors.” Examined under oath. bankrupt stated that he had kept no book* nor was his life insured. His; wife had n<money or property, and the value of (die furniture, which was jointly .owned by him and his wife, was estimated at about £4O. He was in debt to the extent of £7O or £BO when he went to Mangatoki, where he received 33 1-1 per cent, of the .sharemilking cheques and 40 per cent of the returns from the calves. He left Mangatoki because lie liad not sufficient labour to enable him to continue sharemilking, and returned to Stratford on August 11, after which he got further into debt on account of his wife’s illnesses. He- had a separator, but that was held under the. hire purchase system. After being pressed he was compelled to file and it was with regret that he stated lie- was unable to make an offer to bis creditors.
